DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z April 11th, 2025
SMOKE: Central United States/Upper Midwest/Gulf Coast... A relatively large area of mixed density remnant smoke attributed to previous and ongoing fires was observed stretching from the Upper Midwest region of the United States to the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic Seaboard. An area of more moderate density smoke was seen moving south through Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri before being concealed by cloud cover to the east. Several individual plumes ranging from light to moderate in density were seen scattered throughout Arkansas, Oklahoma and and Kansas and were blowing mostly south-southeast in direction as the morning progressed. AEROSOL/SMOKE: Central and Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of America/Yucatan Peninsula/Bay of Campeche/Gulf Coast... An area of light to moderate density smoke and aerosols attributed to scattered agricultural burning, volcanic emissions, and industrial sources throughout Central and Southern Mexico was observed this morning along the western coast of Mexico, with areas of more dense smoke/aerosols seen near northern Central America. The combination of smoke and aerosols was then observed extending further west into the Pacific Ocean off the southwest coast of Mexico and Central America. It then continued east into the Gulf of America, continuing north into southern Texas and east along the Gulf Coast, before expanding south through the Gulf of America towards the Bay of Campeche where additional gas flaring emissions could be seen originating from oil rigs. Willkens THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
