DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2310Z April 28th, 2025

SMOKE:
Mississippi Gulf Coast/Mississippi Valley Region/Lake Michigan/Western
Michigan/Northern Indiana...
A large area of remnant to light density smoke from seasonal fire activity
was observed traveling northward from the Mississippi Gulf Coast through
the Mississippi Valley region to Lake Michigan. From there, the smoke was
observed traveling eastward across western Michigan and northern Indiana.

Florida/Gulf of America...
Several prescribed agricultural burns just south of Lake Okeechobee were
observed this evening emitting light plumes that were blowing westward
into the Gulf of America.

Cuba and the Bahamas...
Light density smoke originating from seasonal fire activity across Cuba
was observed this evening drifting southwestward into the Caribbean
Sea. Two large smoke plumes from suspected bush fires were also observed
originating from Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Yucatan Peninsula/Gulf of
America/Southern Texas...
An area of light smoke and aerosols, attributed to widespread seasonal
fire activity, volcanic emissions, and industrial sources throughout
Central and Southern Mexico was observed today over Mexico and extending
south into the Pacific Ocean off of Mexico’s southern coastline. The
combination of smoke and aerosols was seen drifting north from the
Yucatan Peninsula across the Gulf of America to southern Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
